Activity 1 - 1/18/11

What is burning, show the chemical formula and an image of the structure.
The fuel of the candle is the wax and the wick is made of twine which keeps the candle slowly burning.  The wax is burning.
Wax = ethalene Glyco + fatty acids
C25 H52 + O2 =  H2O + CO2

Write the chemical reaction.
2C20 H42 + 61O2 --> 40CO2 + 42 H2O
C25 H52 + 38O2 --> 25CO2 + 26H2O
2C36 H74 + 109O2 --> 72CO2 + 74H2O

Write the balanced chemical reaction.
C25H52 + 38 O2 → 25 CO2 + 26 H2O
